    Asbestos in Australia

Asbestos was a popular product used in the construction and industrial sectors in Australia between the 1920s and 1980s; it was used prolifically until 1990 when health concerns and legislation banned the production and sale of this deadly product.

Examples of some common products that are known to contain asbestos include:

    • Cement sheeting (fibro)
    • Roofing
    • Wall and ceiling sheeting
    • Drain and flue pipes
    • Flexible building boards (e.g. Villaboard, Hardiflex, etc.)

On December 31st 2003, the import, sale, storage or use of asbestos was finally banned in all states across Australia.

Asbestos has been directly linked to many significant and potentially fatal health complications. These health risks include:

At this stage mesothelioma and asbestosis are exclusively linked to the inhalation of asbestos fibres. The chance of developing these conditions is increased significantly if an individual is also a smoker.

To date there is no known cure for mesothelioma and asbestosis. Australia has some of the highest recorded rates of asbestos-related disease in the world. For more information about asbestos and the health risks of asbestos exposure head to www.asbestossafety.gov.au.

    Asbestos Products & Health Risks

There are two main types of asbestos materials; bonded (non-friable), and non-bonded (friable). A bonded asbestos product in good condition does not usually present much risk while intact.

Friable asbestos, however, can be easily broken down by hand and crumbled into pieces and usually has a very high fiber content. When this material is broken or damaged, it allows minute asbestos particles and fibers to become airborne, which poses significant risks, such as cancer, especially in the lungs and stomach.

Examples of bonded asbestos products may include

    Roofing sheets
    Fencing
    Shingles and eaves
    Fireproof boards
Exterior and interior wall & ceiling cladding
    Water or flue pipe

When you discover and confirm that products containing asbestos are on your property or worksite, you are required under Australian law to provide a report and register on the details of the materials.

Other information required in the management documents include, but are not limited to:

The register should be reviewed at least once every five years to ensure it is kept up-to-date.  When reviewing the asbestos register, the person should carry out a visual inspection of the asbestos and ACM listed to determine its condition and revise the asbestos register as appropriate. Previous asbestos registers and records relating to asbestos can assist in identifying all asbestos and ACM on a site.

The asbestos register must be kept up to date if changes occur throughout the process of its management and removal.

    Updates must be recorded whenever:
