What is Asbestos Sample Testing? Why is it Important?

    asbestos in aus

Asbestos sample testing is the process of analysing materials suspected of containing asbestos fibres. This is typically done to identify and quantify the presence of asbestos in various building materials, such as insulation, roofing, flooring, and pipes. Testing helps determine if the asbestos is in a friable (easily crumbled) or non-friable (solid and stable) state, significantly impacting the potential health risk.

For accurate and reliable results, it is essential to ensure that the asbestos inspection is performed by NATA-accredited asbestos testing providers. These accredited laboratories follow rigorous standards to ensure the accuracy and safety of the testing process. Asbestos sample collection must be done carefully to avoid contamination or exposure, which is why it is recommended to hire professionals who specialise in professional asbestos testing. These experts can conduct the sampling safely and interpret the results accurately to assess any potential health hazards associated with asbestos exposure.

Asbestos is a known carcinogen, and exposure to its fibres can cause serious health conditions, such as lung cancer, asbestosis, and mesothelioma. Asbestos testing is essential for identifying its presence in materials before disturbances like renovations, demolitions, or routine maintenance. Laboratory analysis helps prevent accidental exposure and ensures compliance with health and safety regulations. In many Australian jurisdictions, laws require an asbestos risk assessment and the creation of an Asbestos Register before certain activities in buildings constructed before the 1980s.
Professional asbestos testing services ensure that proper procedures are followed, minimising risk to individuals and maintaining safety during construction or renovation. Early detection of asbestos contamination is crucial for preventing long-term health risks and ensuring compliance with relevant regulations.

The Process of Asbestos Sample Collection and Testing

Asbestos sample collection and testing are critical for safety and accuracy. Asbestos registered professionals, equipped with protective gear, follow strict guidelines to collect samples safely, using specialised tools to prevent asbestos fibers from being released into the air.

Once collected, the sample is sent to a NATA-accredited laboratory for analysis. Advanced asbestos detection methods are used to accurately identify the type and concentration of asbestos fibers, and the results are compiled into a detailed report to help property owners manage asbestos risks.

    Asbestos DIY

Although it is not recommended, DIY sample collection can be carried out by the homeowner, business person or contractor.  The necessary precautions must be carried out to ensure that fibre release is controlled and the health risks during this process are minimised.

    DIY Asbestos Sampling

Only a competent person or a person with asbestos experience should take the asbestos samples because of the increased health risk of fibres being released during the process. If the sampling process is conducted incorrectly, it can be more hazardous than leaving the material alone. Any sample taken should be sealed within a container, or a 200 µm polythene bag, and appropriately labelled.

All asbestos samples must be analysed by a NATA-accredited laboratory or one that is approved or operated by the relevant regulator.

    • If more than one sample, each sample must be enclosed separately to avoid cross contamination and to ensure the integrity of the sample collected.
    • Each sample container or bag should be marked with the location it was taken from.
    • Each sample is to be between the size of a 5 and 50 cent piece.
    • Appropriate PPE is to be worn during the sample collection process.

We guarantee NATA certified testing for all responsible DIY asbestos samples. Head to our DIY asbestos page for advice on how to safely and effectively obtain asbestos test samples.

    DIY Asbestos Removal

Although it is not recommended, DIY asbestos removal of up to 10m2 of non-friable (bonded) asbestos for home renovators is not illegal in the state of Queensland.

A removal license is required when more than 10m2 of asbestos is to be removed.

Some of the specification for performing DIY asbestos removal on non-friable (bonded) asbestos in Queensland include:

    • Persons must be over 18-years of age.
    • The person managing the removal must be deemed competent.
    • All persons must be provided with the correct PPE.
    • All necessary precautions must be taken to avoid breakage and dust.
    • All actions must be recorded and documented in line with your management plan etc.

It should be noted that while it is not illegal to carry out limited DIY asbestos removal in Queensland, this does not mean it is not a risk to the health and wellbeing of yourself and others.
