How to Take Your Own Asbestos Sample

If you are considering taking your own asbestos sample, here is how we recommend you do it. First, protect yourself by wearing a dust mask and disposable gloves. If you have a heating or cooling system running in your home, turn it off as well as any fans. This will help to minimise the release of any fibres into the air. You should try and take your samples from areas that are damaged. If you cannot, take the sample from a zone that will not be so noticeable.

Wet the material before cutting it. This will also minimise the release of fibres. Try not to disturb the area any more than is needed to remove the sample. Cut a piece, at least the size of a 5-cent coin but no larger than a 50-cent piece. Place the sample into a clean container. A ZipLock bag works great. Label the bag. Clean up the area from which you took the sample and then move to another area of the home.

Once complete, place all of your samples into another bag and prepare them for mailing. You will need to complete the Asbestos Sample Analysis Request Form and then post the sample to our offices at AHI, PO Box 6091, Logan Central, Q 4114. Once we receive the laboratory results, we will email you with the results.
